In 1995, I was a teacher when I was diagnosed with testicular cancer. Afterwards, I spoke to my learners about the disease every year.
In 2006, a former student named Phillip invited me for coffee. At just 16, he too had been diagnosed.
He told me: “Because you made us aware, I went to the doctor in time.”
Then he said I had saved his life.
That conversation is why I started Love Your Nuts. A lesson I had taught stayed with him until the moment he needed it.
Now, I want to put that knowledge into thousands more young people’s hands.
We have developed a cancer education programme for learners from Grade 3 to Grade 12. Our next step is an interactive gaming app that helps them recognise potential warning signs, seek professional advice and support someone affected by cancer.
